Too smart could be bad?

Have you ever tried to walk in Best Buy, Circuit City (RIP) or contact a hardware vendor with request for something (really almost anything) that would have LINUX support? Well, then you know the surprise, the blank stare, perhaps the arrogant (and ignorant) rejection of the possibility that such a fine store/vendor/site could carry something even remotely connected to LINUX.
Until recently I was accepting this as a simple fact of life. Now however I am really pissed off. At the LINUX users. Because ultimately I think it is there damn fault. They are too smart and independent, so if something does not work, they would try to fix it, then ask around and finally perhaps write the damn missing driver themselves (and brag to others about, even help with installation).
Well, if I was making hardware I would never pay a developer to write a driver. EVER. Why should I? Those on the LINUX side would cope somehow. And would rarely complain or go to the competition (they don't support LINUX either anyway).
Where the good old M$ user wants to have it out of the box. And if not they will bitch aboutm return it back to the store, etc. Not that all of the Windows users are like that but most are.
I vowed never again to pay the M$ tax again and every time I see that gadget I buy is supported for VISTA (dude, if you use VISTA no gadget would help you), perhaps even XP and Mac, but no LINUX I feel like I really need to kick something/someone.
So after several paragraphs of bitching here is an idea (actually couple).
  1. Blacklist vendors that are LINYX hostile (DELL used to tell users they can not install LINUX or will lose the warranty on their laptops, to be fair they changed a lot).
  2. Whitelist for vendors, who at least make an effort
  3. Communicate directly (tell the damn vendor your are not buying it and why)
  4. Do not install LINUX over Windoze installation- the Redmond folks would still count it as another Wincrap system in the world. You will see this 1% market share for LINUX jump. There are couple of vendors that build LINUX systems and if you don't like them and you are so damn smart- build one yourself.
If you listen to me we'll all be better down the road. Except for Uncle Bill and his team perhaps.

Here are some sites that are relevant:
  • Vendors
Tuxmobil
System76 (prebuilt, linux compatible systems)
Leadcomp (configurator, would put LINUX on the custom built machines)

  • Hardware compatibility sites

MythTV
Linux.org

There are certainly many more, anyone is welcome to contribute. And if I get really angry and not that lazy I will create a blacklist database.

Just a quick note. This was triggered by the following Logitech page. Just read the answers the Logitech gives with respect to LINUX support.
